Amazon return policy days: 30, 15 for Apple, and the exceptions
How many days Amazon gives you to return an item, by category: Apple, mattresses, Renewed, digital purchases, registry gifts, and third-party sellers.

- 7 days Kindle books bought by accident and not read; digital textbooks not downloaded; songs bought by accident with Alexa
- 15 days Apple products sold new; Amazon Haul items over $3
- 30 days Most items, from delivery (key date)
- 90 days Mattresses; most Renewed items; most nonperishable baby products
- 180 days Gifts from an Amazon Wedding Registry
- 365 days Renewed Premium; gifts from an Amazon Baby Registry
Items sold by Amazon.com, as its return policy listed them on October 20, 2026.
When does the 30-day clock start?
On the day the item is delivered, not the day you order. Amazon’s policy says most items can be returned within 30 days of delivery if they are in original or unused condition.

If a package arrives on October 20, 2026, these are the last days for each window:
| Window | Last day for an October 20 delivery |
|---|---|
| 15 days (Apple) | Wednesday, November 4, 2026 |
| 30 days (most items) | Thursday, November 19, 2026 |
| 90 days (mattresses, most Renewed) | Monday, January 18, 2027 |
| 365 days (Renewed Premium) | Wednesday, October 20, 2027 |
Your own date is in Your Orders, so you don’t have to count. After you start a return, the return-by date also appears in the confirmation email and the Return Request tab. Dropping the item off after that date can cost a late fee of 20% of the price for the first 30 days after it, then 100%, as explained in Amazon’s late return fee.

Which items get a different window?
Amazon lists its exceptions in one table. Everything not on it gets 30 days.

Apple. New Apple-brand products get 15 days, half the usual window. The row says “sold in new condition”, so Renewed Apple products follow the Renewed windows instead. AppleCare+ plans are canceled under the plan’s own terms.
Mattresses. Mattresses get 90 days. Crib mattresses are left out of that row, so check the product page for one. Some pages still give 100 days. That was Amazon’s mattress window until at least December 2024; a copy of the policy from March 2025 already shows 90. The 180-day row is for wedding registry gifts, not mattresses.
Renewed. Most Renewed items get 90 days, and Renewed Premium gets 365. Some Renewed items get only 30 days plus an 11-month limited warranty serviced by Asurion, so read the return details on the product page before you buy. Before you send back a Renewed device, back up your data, turn off phone tracking, unlink cloud accounts, and factory reset it, or Amazon won’t refund or replace it.
Registry gifts. The longer windows (90, 180, and 365 days) apply to items bought from someone’s Birthday, Wedding, or Baby Registry by someone other than the registry owner.
Amazon devices. Kindle, Fire, and Echo devices no longer have their own section in the policy, so they get the standard 30 days from delivery.
Digital purchases. The 7-day window covers Kindle books bought by accident and not read, digital textbooks and other educational content not yet downloaded, and songs or albums bought by accident with Alexa. For Kindle books, the 7 days count from the purchase. Downloadable software, opened software, and online subscriptions you have used can’t be returned.
What about items from third-party sellers?
A seller that ships its own inventory handles the return. Amazon requires the seller to offer a US return address, a prepaid return label, or a full refund without the item coming back.

You still start the return in Your Orders, and the seller reviews the request. If the seller doesn’t answer within two business days, you can ask for an A-to-z Guarantee refund. That guarantee’s refund rules assume you requested the return within 30 days of delivery. Returns to third-party sellers can carry extra fees, which the policy doesn’t list.
Does Amazon extend returns for the holidays?
It did last year, and it hasn’t announced 2026 terms as of October 20, 2026. In 2025, most items bought from November 1 through December 31 could be returned until January 31, 2026, and Apple products until January 15, 2026. Last year’s terms appeared on Amazon’s pages between October 22 and November 9. The holiday return deadlines hub tracks which stores have posted 2026 dates.
What changed, and when
| Change | When it shows up in archived copies |
|---|---|
| Apple products get 15 days instead of 30 | Between December 2022 and June 2023 |
| Mattresses go from 100 days to 90 | Between December 2024 and March 2025 |
| Amazon devices lose their own section and follow the 30-day default | Same redesign, by March 2025 |
| The policy counts from delivery instead of “receipt of shipment” | Same redesign, by March 2025 |
Amazon’s policy page says it may change the policy at any time, so check the product page for anything with a lot of money on the line.
