Amazon gives you two deadlines, and the late fee is about the second one.

  • The return window decides whether you can start a return at all. It is 30 days from delivery for most items, 15 for new Apple products, and shorter or longer for some categories.
  • The return-by date is set when you start a return. It is the day by which you have to drop the item off or finish a carrier pickup.

Miss the return-by date and Amazon can charge a late fee on the return.

How much is the late fee?

20% of the item price for the first 30 days after the return-by date, then 100% of the item price.

Late fee by how late the return is
  1. Return-by date Drop off or pickup done: no late fee
  2. Days 1 to 30 after 20% of the item price
  3. Day 31 on 100% of the item price (key date)

Amazon's wording: 20% for the first 30 days after the return-by date, 100% afterwards.

The same headphones dropped off 31 or more days late carry a $200 fee, the whole price. Amazon also notes that a returned item can’t be sent back to you, so a 100% fee leaves you with neither the item nor the money.

Where is my return-by date?

Amazon puts it in two places: the confirmation email you get when you start the return, and the Return Request tab in your Order History. Check it the day you start the return, not the day you plan to ship.

You start a return from the same page, labeled Your Orders:

What if I already got my refund?

Amazon can charge it back if the item doesn’t arrive. It issues advanced refunds when the carrier first scans your return, not when the item reaches the warehouse. If you were refunded or sent a replacement and the item doesn’t come back in time, Amazon sends a reminder first. If it still doesn’t arrive in time, Amazon charges your account for the refund or replacement. It reverses that charge once it receives and processes the item.

For holiday gifts, Amazon had not posted 2026 holiday return dates as of October 19, 2026; last year’s dates and other stores’ status are in holiday return deadlines by store.

Other return fees

Fee When it applies Amount
Return shipping You pick a paid drop-off or shipping option, the item is heavy or bulky, or you have an unusually high return rate Varies by item and method
Damage The item is damaged, missing parts, not in original condition, has tags removed, or shows use, for reasons that aren’t Amazon’s or the seller’s error Up to 50% of the price; 100% for Amazon Luxury items
Restocking Opened, activated, or used software and video games; opened collectible cards, board games, and collectible figurines 100% of the price

Heavy or bulky means 50 pounds or more, a longest side over 59 inches when packed, or girth over 130 inches. If you use a paid return method, Amazon deducts the shipping cost and any restocking fee from your refund. Restocking fees on items shipped and sold by Amazon can be taxed in Connecticut, Maryland, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

When did Amazon add this?

The 20% fee was in place by February 3, 2025; the 100% tier arrived between September 8 and October 22, 2025. No announcement of either change appeared on the Amazon help pages checked for this guide as of October 19, 2026. Both dates come from the Internet Archive’s copies of the return policy.

Copy of the policy Late fee
February 3, 2025 20% of the item price
September 8, 2025 20% of the item price
October 22, 2025 20% for the first 30 days after the return-by date, 100% afterwards

The 100% tier is still on the live page as of October 19, 2026.

What Amazon’s pages don’t say

  • How many days after you start a return the return-by date is set.
  • Whether there is any grace period or waiver for a late drop-off.
  • Whether canceling a return and starting a new one gives you a new date. Amazon only says you can create a new return after canceling.
