Amazon Renewed grades: battery, condition, and buying checks

Compare Renewed cosmetic grades, battery thresholds, accessories and listing-specific coverage, then use a short checklist to judge the price against new.

Excellent does not mean a new battery

The first comparison is between the battery promise and the cosmetic grade. Amazon’s US Renewed standards give Excellent, Good and Acceptable the same battery threshold. Paying more for Excellent alone does not buy a higher published battery minimum.

Renewed grade Screen and body standard Battery threshold in the grade table
Premium Scratch-free screen; no body damage visible at 12 inches Above 90% of original battery life
Excellent Scratch-free screen; no body damage visible at 12 inches Above 80%
Good Scratch-free screen; light body scratches barely visible at 12 inches and not felt by touch Above 80%
Acceptable A few shallow screen scratches may be present but invisible with the screen on; visible, touchable body scratches and up to 3 minor dents Above 80%

Amazon’s separate battery note describes the 80% / 90% capacity floors as “at least” 80%, or 90% for Premium, relative to new at the time of sale. The grade table uses greater-than signs. Neither description promises 100% capacity, a new battery or a particular number of hours between charges.

The phone in the cover photo is an iPhone 12 Pro used as a device example. Its appearance does not establish a Renewed grade or show what an Amazon seller will send you.

Check who refurbished it and what comes in the box

Amazon says qualified suppliers inspect and test Renewed products. A supplier can be a qualified manufacturer or a specialized third-party refurbisher. If that supplier is a third-party seller, the seller performs the inspection and testing. Do not assume the device went through its original manufacturer’s refurbishment program merely because it appears on Amazon.

Accessories and packaging may be generic rather than original-brand. Wireless devices do not come with headphones under the published standards, and listing exceptions can apply. Refurbished phones are not guaranteed to retain their waterproof seal. If you need a particular charger, cable or other accessory, check the listing’s included-items statement before treating its price as a complete replacement for buying new.

Read the actual coverage before paying

The Renewed Guarantee currently describes more than one route:

  • Most Renewed products have a 90-day return period.
  • Renewed Premium and Renewed Automotive products have a 365-day return period.
  • Select products instead have a 30-day return period followed by an 11-month limited warranty serviced by Asurion.

The third route is not an extended change-of-mind return period. Its limited-warranty terms cover defects in materials and workmanship, with stated exclusions such as accidental and water damage. The warranty applies to eligible Amazon.com products delivered within the 50 US states; Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands and APO/FPO/DPO addresses are excluded. Asurion chooses the covered remedy under the terms.

Amazon’s current Guarantee explains that most Renewed items have 90-day returns, Premium and Automotive have 365 days, and buyers should check product-specific eligibility
The word ‘most’ matters. Check the product detail page for its own return eligibility before ordering.Screenshot: Amazon Renewed Guarantee, captured

Check the exact product’s eligibility on its detail page before purchase, then check Order History after purchase. For other Amazon purchase types, use our Amazon return-window comparison rather than applying a Renewed rule to every used or new listing.

Decide whether this particular offer is worth it

Open the official Renewed store and compare the offer with a new or manufacturer-refurbished alternative that has the same model, storage and required compatibility. Record the seller, condition, included accessories and applicable coverage alongside each price. A percentage off an unmatched model is not a useful saving comparison.

Choose a grade based on the wear you will accept and the battery promise you need. Do not assign a fixed dollar value to Premium without comparing the actual price gap. If the listing leaves an accessory, compatibility requirement or coverage unclear, resolve it before ordering.

If the product later needs help during its return period, Amazon directs you to Your Orders and Get Product Support beside the item, or Contact Us if that button is missing. Before a device return, back up your data, disable tracking, unlink cloud accounts and factory-reset it. Amazon makes those steps a condition of replacement or refund eligibility.
