SodaStream costs: compare the refill, shipping and actual yield
Work out your SodaStream gas cost using the right cylinder, delivered exchange price and actual output, then add the costs a per-liter claim leaves out.

Start with the sparkling water you already buy: its price divided by the liters in the pack. Then compare that with what you actually pay to keep a SodaStream running. A low gas-only figure is useful only if it uses the right refill price and a realistic amount of water from each cylinder.
This guide uses SodaStream’s US public pages as read October 26, 2026. The older machine in the photo illustrates the equipment involved; it does not establish current cylinder compatibility. No machine, gas output or taste was tested.
First check whether you need a spare or an exchange
An exchange supplies refill gas on the condition that you return an empty cylinder. A spare is a different purchase: it gives you another full cylinder without an empty to return. Comparing the spare’s entire price with a shop’s gas exchange price would compare different purchases.
Before ordering, match the cylinder to your exact machine. SodaStream has separate Classic screw-in and Quick Connect systems. Its refill and exchange guide has a compatibility lookup and a store-finder route. Do not assume a cylinder fits because it is sold under the same brand.

If you are buying your first machine, find out which cylinders and bottles the actual bundle includes before adding spares. Include anything you still need in the upfront basket; do not count it as a recurring gas exchange.
Use the delivered basket, not just the refill headline
On October 26, the US refill page displayed three cylinders at $50.97, with $7.99 shipping for the one-time selection. Those displayed inputs total $58.96 before tax, without a coupon or another shipping adjustment. This was a public-page observation, not a completed checkout.
The same page advertised a temporary FREESHIP code for orders of $30 or more. We did not apply it or verify exchange-order eligibility. The shipping line therefore does not prove that $7.99 is unavoidable, or that subscribing is the only way to get free shipping.
The subscription selection displayed $50.97 with free shipping and described free shipping on subscription orders over $50. It also advertised an extra $8 off at four cylinders. Check the actual selected basket and repeat-order terms before comparing; a four-cylinder offer is not a three-cylinder price.
For a local exchange, compare the shop’s actual exchange quote and whether it accepts your cylinder type. Local stock and prices were not verified here.
Replace the advertised yield with your own usage
SodaStream’s US exchange page describes up to 15 gallons per cylinder, depending on carbonation level and machine type. That is a maximum claim, not a measured household average. It is also not an exact conversion to 60 liters.
The following examples use hypothetical yields of 30 or 45 liters per cylinder. They are inputs to replace, not test results or predicted output. Each calculation divides the three-cylinder order total by three times the assumed yield.
| Liters per cylinder (assumed) | $/liter, $7.99 shipping | $/liter, $0 shipping |
|---|---|---|
| 30 liters | $0.66 | $0.57 |
| 45 liters | $0.44 | $0.38 |
The table uses $50.97 for the refills and rounds to the nearest cent. It excludes tax, water, flavors, the machine, replacement bottles and any late-cylinder charge. The $0 shipping column is a comparison scenario, not confirmation that a coupon will work for your order.
If bottled sparkling water costs less per liter than your gas alone, this refill route does not save money on drinks at those inputs. If gas costs less, subtract it from the bottled-water price, then account for the other costs before estimating how much use would recover the equipment purchase. A plain-water comparison also should not be presented as the cost of flavored soda.
Keep the empty-return obligation in the comparison
The current refill page requires one empty cylinder for each refill ordered. It states a 60-day return window for a one-time exchange. For a subscription, the window is the delivery frequency plus 30 days. Check your account’s actual deadline instead of applying the one-time rule to every plan.
Late, missing or damaged empty cylinders can lead to an additional $15 plus tax per cylinder, under the page’s stated conditions. If you have no empties to return, the refill price is not the whole purchase cost.

The page says the return box and prepaid return label are included. We inspected the instructions and public selector, not a signed-in return or purchase. A larger batch is useful only if its upfront cost, consumption pace and return obligation suit your household.
If you already ordered the wrong equipment from Amazon, check the order’s actual return options before buying again. Our Amazon return-window guide explains the standard window and why product-specific exceptions matter.
