Wayfair return policy: 30 days, and who pays return shipping
Wayfair's 30-day window, what return shipping costs and when it is free, mattress and appliance rules, the 2026 holiday window, and refund times.

This guide follows Wayfair’s US Help Center pages on returns, refunds, and damaged items as read on October 20, 2026.
How long do you have to return something to Wayfair?
Most items: 30 days from delivery. The item has to be in its original, undamaged condition. If the box is too damaged to reuse, use a similar-sized box or one no longer than 108 inches. If the item came disassembled, send it back disassembled; if the delivery team took the packaging away, you don’t need any.

Some items have a different clock or can’t come back at all:
| Item | Rule |
|---|---|
| Large appliances | 48 hours from delivery, not installed, in the original packaging; you may owe the manufacturer’s restocking fee |
| Mattresses | 100-night trial (not toppers, crib, air, or open-box mattresses) |
| Open box and clearance items, gift cards, made-to-order or personalized items, live plants, swatches | Can’t be returned |
| Items bundled at a discount | Only if the whole bundle comes back |
| Items marked “Non-Returnable” | Can’t be returned; the cart shows a message |
| Some dangerous goods (flammable liquids, matches, compressed gas, propane tanks, lighters, damaged lithium batteries) and some large orders sent by consolidated delivery | Can’t be returned |

Who pays return shipping at Wayfair?
Usually you do. Wayfair says customers are “generally responsible for the cost of return shipping,” and the fee comes out of your refund. It depends on where you are, the item’s size and weight, and the return method you pick, and Wayfair shows no fixed price list. Delivery fees and service charges on the original order aren’t refunded, and if you refuse a delivery, the return costs come out of your refund too.
Return shipping is not deducted in two cases:
- You drop the item at a Wayfair store, whatever refund method you choose.
- You mail it back as a Wayfair Rewards member or Wayfair Credit Card holder and take store credit. Through the end of 2026, these members get up to five free mail-in returns on eligible items with store credit. Some product types are excluded, and a FedEx Pickup still costs $4.

Wayfair’s stores are in Wilmette and Naperville, Illinois; Greensboro, North Carolina; Attleboro, Massachusetts; Orlando, Florida; Atlanta, Georgia; San Marcos, Texas; Chandler, Arizona; Hanover, Maryland; Columbus and Dublin, Ohio; and Burlington, Ontario. Items that need a forklift to unload, or are unsafe to unload, can’t be returned there.
How do you start a Wayfair return?
- Go to My Orders in your Wayfair account.
- Pick the return option for the item.
- Fill in the form, including the return method and refund method.
Wayfair emails instructions and any labels. Before you finish, it may offer a discount to keep the item instead; you can decline and go on with the return.
| Return method | Print a label? | Need to be home? |
|---|---|---|
| FedEx drop-off with a label | Yes | No |
| FedEx drop-off with a QR code | No | No |
| FedEx pickup ($4 fee for free-return members) | Yes | No; FedEx collects from outside your door |
| Large parcel pickup outside your front door | No | No |
| Large parcel pickup inside your doorway, backyard, or a room you choose | No | Yes; the driver calls 30 minutes ahead |
| Large parcel white glove pickup | No | Yes; you disassemble and repack it first |
| Wayfair store drop-off | No; bring the QR code from your email | You go to the store |
Packages of 55 pounds or more have to go to a FedEx Office, not a smaller drop-off point. You can cancel a return in My Account, but a carrier may still show up; tell the driver it’s canceled.
How long does a Wayfair refund take?
Wayfair starts the refund when your item reaches its Return Center, or when the store processes it. The Refunds page says that can take up to 14 business days after the item arrives. After Wayfair issues it:
| Refund to | Typical time after Wayfair issues it |
|---|---|
| Store credit or a Wayfair gift card balance | 1 business day |
| Debit or credit card, Apple Pay, Wayfair Credit Card | 3 to 5 business days |
| PayPal | 1 business day from a PayPal balance; usually 5 business days, up to 30 days, from a card or bank via PayPal |
| Klarna | Up to 15 business days in total |
| Cash App Afterpay, Wayfair Financing | Up to 10 business days |
| Bank transfer or check | Contact Wayfair; up to 30 days |
Wayfair has no direct exchanges: return the item, then order the one you want. Store credit from a return doesn’t expire. Some payment methods, such as financing, can’t be refunded as store credit.
What is Wayfair’s mattress return policy?
Every mattress comes with a 100-night trial. A return to store credit is free; a refund to your original payment method costs $49 to $99. Wayfair asks you to give a new mattress at least a couple of weeks, and to wait 48 to 72 hours for a folded mattress to expand. In Connecticut, Rhode Island, and California, the state mattress recycling fee ($10 to $25) is not refunded.
What if a Wayfair item arrives damaged?
Report it in My Orders under Problem with this Order, with photos of the whole item, the packaging, and close-ups of the damage. For standard deliveries you have 30 days from delivery; for Full Delivery Service, where the team inspects the item when it arrives, you have 3 days. For a large appliance that arrives damaged, Wayfair says to refuse the delivery and contact it for a replacement.
Does Wayfair extend returns for the holidays?
Yes. Items bought from November 1 through December 31 can be returned until January 31, except appliances, which keep their 48-hour window. For other stores’ 2026 holiday dates, see holiday return deadlines by store.
