Nordstrom return policy: no time limit, and Rack gets 40 days

This guide follows Nordstrom’s and Nordstrom Rack’s US return pages as read on October 20, 2026. They are two stores with two policies, so the guide keeps them apart.

Is there really no time limit on Nordstrom returns?

Yes, on paper. Nordstrom’s own FAQ answers “Is there a time limit?” with “There are no time limits for returns or exchanges.” The same answer adds that “from time to time we may not accept a return,” and the policy says Nordstrom handles returns “on a case-by-case basis.” Its annual report for fiscal 2024 puts it the same way: for the Nordstrom banner (stores and Nordstrom.com, not Rack), the company has “no formal policy on how long we accept returns.”

So “Nordstrom takes anything back, forever” overstates it. No date cuts you off, but each return is a judgment call, and Nordstrom says plainly that it sometimes says no. The page does not say what makes it refuse one.

What do you need to return to Nordstrom?

Nordstrom charges no restocking fees, but it does not refund shipping charges. A few items have their own rules:

• Special-occasion dresses and some designer items: return them in the same condition, with all packaging and the tags still attached.
• Car seats and bases: only in the original, unopened box.
• Fine jewelry: not by mail; take it to a Nordstrom store with a Fine Jewelry department.
• Watchfinder & Co. pre-owned watches: final sale.
• Balsam Hill: within 30 days or before December 25, whichever comes first, by calling 1-888-282-6060 for a label.
• Gift cards: can’t be returned.
• Items from third-party sellers on Nordstrom.com: each seller sets a return-by date, shown in your order history; items must be unworn, undamaged, unaltered, and tagged.

How do you return to Nordstrom by mail or in a store?

In a store, go to any register; Nordstrom says to expect the refund in 3 to 5 business days. By mail, start the return in your Nordstrom account (Purchases, then Details, then Start a Return) or, as a guest, with your order number and ZIP code. Nordstrom no longer puts a return label in the box: print the prepaid label it emails you, or show the QR code at an eligible USPS or FedEx location and they print it. Mail returns take 8 to 12 business days to process, then 3 to 5 business days for the refund.

Nordstrom items can also go back at Nordstrom Rack and Nordstrom Local, except fine jewelry and designer items, which Rack stores don’t take. Boutique purchases go back to the store where you bought them.

How is Nordstrom Rack’s return policy different?

Nordstrom Rack has a fixed window and charges for mail returns.

Rack’s FAQ still says “We always have free returns by mail and in store,” which contradicts the $9.95 charge on its policy page. Go by the policy page, or return the item to a store, which is free either way. Gifts bought online from Rack can go back to a Rack or Nordstrom store in the US, refunded on a Nordstrom gift card.

Rack’s window changed this year. The archived copy of May 23, 2026 gave 40 days for online purchases but 30 days for store purchases, with gift card refunds up to 60 days. The page now gives 40 days for both, and no gift card tier.

When is the Nordstrom Rack holiday return deadline for 2026?

Rack purchases made from October 5 through December 24, 2026 can be returned until January 18, 2027 or 40 days after purchase, whichever is later. From December 10 on, the 40 days end after January 18, so the later date applies.
