TJ Maxx return policy: 30 days in store, 40 online, $11.99 by mail

This guide follows the US return pages of TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and HomeGoods as read on October 20, 2026. The three are sister stores owned by TJX, and their rules are nearly the same.

How long do you have to return something to TJ Maxx?

TJ Maxx takes back “most unwashed, unused, and appropriately tagged merchandise.” Used, worn, or unsellable items aren’t accepted, swimwear and intimates need their tags attached, and opened or tampered-with beauty items can’t be returned.

What if you don’t have a receipt?

You get merchandise credit, not a refund. TJ Maxx gives credit for any return after 30 days, any return with a gift receipt, and any return without a receipt. For a no-receipt return you need a government-issued photo ID, your name, address, and signature, and the same ID to spend the credit later: the names must match. TJ Maxx’s refund verification system can limit or decline returns.

Online orders can’t be mailed back without a receipt. In a store, use the shipping confirmation email or the barcode or order number from your online order details.

How much does a TJ Maxx mail return cost?

$11.99 per return package, taken from your refund or store credit, unless the item is defective. A mailed return has to reach the warehouse within 40 days of the order date for a refund; one that arrives later gets digital merchandise credit. Returning an online order to a TJ Maxx store is free. Start a mail return in the online returns portal and drop it at the carrier you pick; TJ Maxx credits mail returns 10 to 14 business days after the warehouse receives them, and refunds store returns on the spot.

Some online purchases can’t go back to a store: items over $1,000, handbags and footwear over $499.99, long occasion gowns, and luggage sets. Oversized items such as accent chairs and area rugs may be blocked in the returns portal; call TJX customer service at 1-833-888-0776 to return them by mail. Gift cards can’t be returned, and online orders can’t be exchanged.

Can you return TJ Maxx items to Marshalls or HomeGoods?

No. Items bought at a TJ Maxx store or on tjmaxx.com go back only to TJ Maxx, and Marshalls says the same about its own items. The pages give no exception.

What is the TJ Maxx holiday return policy for 2026?

Purchases made from October 4 through December 24, 2026 get extra time. Store purchases can be returned through January 25, 2027, and online purchases through February 4, 2027. Gifts returned with a receipt get store credit, and the normal windows apply again to purchases from December 26. Marshalls posts the same in-store dates.

The pages don’t say whether a holiday return after day 30 gets a refund or merchandise credit. HomeGoods’ return page still shows last year’s dates (purchases from October 5 to December 24, 2025, returnable through January 24, 2026) as of October 20, 2026, so ask the store before counting on the 2026 extension there.
