Ross returns: receipts, store credit, and mailed vouchers
Prepare for a Ross return with the receipt, original payment card, or photo ID, and check what changes after 30 days or above $50 without proof.

Over $50 without a receipt means a mailed voucher
For an approved no-receipt refund over $50, Ross sends a store-credit voucher by mail within 21 days of the return transaction. The voucher goes to the address on your valid picture ID. Ross does not promise that you will leave with immediately usable credit.
The General Return Policy on Ross’s Contact Us page states this rule. The threshold is over $50; the wording does not include a refund of exactly $50. The 21 days describe when Ross sends the voucher, not a guaranteed arrival date.

Without a receipt, the refund or exchange is based on the item’s current selling price. Your original spending amount may be higher. Ross’s rule does not say “lowest price in the last 90 days.”
- Original price you paid
- $80
- Current selling price
- $60
- Store-credit amount
- $60, sent as a mailed voucher because it exceeds $50
In that example, the credit is $20 below the original price. It assumes the item qualifies and Ross approves the return; ID alone does not guarantee acceptance.
What changes with a receipt or after 30 days?
With the original receipt, eligible merchandise returned within 30 days of purchase gets a full refund to the original payment method. A receipt older than 30 days changes the published outcome to an exchange or store credit.
| What you bring | Published outcome for eligible merchandise |
|---|---|
| Original receipt, within 30 days | Full refund to the original payment method |
| Receipt older than 30 days | Exchange or store credit |
| No receipt, with valid picture ID | Current-selling-price store credit or exchange, if approved; refunds over $50 use a mailed voucher |
For a credit- or debit-card purchase, bring the same card you used. Ross requires that card to be present and refunds back to it. Cash refunds for purchases paid by check have a 5-day waiting period.
There is no published 60- or 90-day cash-refund grace period in the current policy. A previous exchange made without a receipt is still treated as a no-receipt transaction.
If the purchase is from Walmart, follow Walmart’s receiptless return process instead; Ross’s mailed-voucher rule does not describe a Walmart return.
Which items can Ross refuse?
Used, worn, or altered merchandise does not qualify for a refund, store credit, or exchange. Swimwear and lingerie need the original ticket attached.
Some merchandise categories cannot be returned or exchanged without a receipt. Tickets may also be required for certain categories. Ross directs shoppers to the front of the receipt or a cashier for that list; its online policy does not name all the categories.
Opened software is not refundable. If it is defective, Ross allows an exchange for like merchandise only.
How many returns without a receipt are allowed?
Ross does not publish a numerical limit. It says its refund verification system limits no-receipt refunds and may decline a return. All returns are subject to verification; a valid ID does not override that check.
The policy lists a driver’s license, state photo ID, passport, or military ID as examples of picture ID. Do not rely on a forum’s count, annual allowance, or reset date as a guaranteed company rule.
Prepare before going to the store
- Check that the item is unused, unworn, and unaltered, with any required tickets.
- Bring the original receipt and, for a card purchase, the same payment card.
- Bring valid picture ID. Ross may request it even for a refund with a receipt.
- Use the Ross store locator to find a store.
- Ask the cashier about category restrictions if you do not have a receipt.
Ross says it does not sell merchandise online. Its return policy does not offer an online-order mail-return process.
For a question the policy does not answer, use the Contact Us form below the policy and store FAQs. Choose the inquiry topic and describe the issue. The form specifically asks you to leave out sensitive personal and payment information.
