Marshalls return policy: 30 or 40 days, fees, and refunds

Which clock applies to your purchase?

For a purchase made in a Marshalls store, the store policy gives you 30 days from purchase with a valid register receipt. A late return, gift-receipt return, or return without a receipt gets merchandise credit, subject to verification.

For an online order, the online policy starts the standard 40 days on the order date. A mailed return must reach the warehouse within that window for an original-payment refund. Starting the request or mailing on day 40 does not meet that arrival requirement.

Check your shipping confirmation for item-specific restrictions. Store purchases go back to a Marshalls store, and Marshalls purchases cannot go back to T.J. Maxx or its other sister brands.

$11.99 is per package. Marshalls advises consolidating items into a single shipment where possible. Check the portal instructions before combining orders.

Check whether a store can accept the online item

The online policy excludes these from in-store returns:

• Items over $1,000.
• Handbags or footwear over $499.99.
• Long occasion gowns and luggage sets.

Used, worn, or unsellable merchandise is not accepted. Opened or tampered-with beauty products are also excluded. Leave any required security tag attached. For store-bought swimwear and intimate apparel, keep the tickets properly attached.

What if the receipt is missing or the window has passed?

Bring your shipping confirmation email or the barcode/order number from your online order details to a store. Without a receipt, the store requires government-issued photo ID, your name, address, and signature. The ID you show when using that credit must have the same name as the ID used for the return.

With a receipt, online returns after 40 days receive merchandise credit. Stores issue physical credit; mailed returns receive digital credit. Mail returns without a receipt are not allowed. Purchases paid partly or entirely with a Marshalls gift card are refunded as merchandise credit. Rewards Certificate refunds are also credit: digital by mail, physical in store.

Marshalls can limit or decline returns through its verification systems. Its pages do not promise acceptance or a particular valuation for every receiptless or late return.

How do you start a mail return?

1. Open the official Marshalls mail-return portal.
2. Enter the order number from your shipping confirmation and the shipping ZIP code.
3. Follow the carrier instructions, including the packing slip and label. The carrier can print them when that option is offered.
4. Keep the items’ plastic packaging and allow enough shipping time for the return to arrive by the applicable deadline.

Mailed refunds generally credit the account within 10–14 business days after Marshalls receives a qualifying return. Stores process the refund on the spot, though your bank may take a few days to post it. The policy makes return shipping and handling fees nonrefundable unless the merchandise is defective.

What are the 2026 holiday return dates?

The current store and online pages publish different deadlines for purchases made October 4–December 24, 2026:

The pages say normal rules resume for purchases beginning December 26. They do not give a separate December 25 purchase rule or explain a holiday-specific mail-arrival exception. For a mailed holiday return, confirm the deadline and instructions for your order before sending it.
