Start with the purchase channel and product category

For most eligible US H&M purchases, returning in a store is free. The online return route has a $5.99 fee deducted from the refund. Those options are not interchangeable for every purchase, so check the current US returns page before choosing the cheaper route.

  • Ordinary online purchases: most can go to a US H&M store, excluding Puerto Rico, or use the online return process. Bring the items, receipt or e-receipt, and original payment method for a store return.
  • Store purchases: return or exchange in a store with a valid receipt and the original payment method. Store purchases cannot be returned by mail.
  • H&M HOME bought online: return by mail. Furniture must be disassembled and returned in its original packaging. HOME bought in a store goes to the original store or another store that carries H&M HOME.

The online-to-store route excludes H&M HOME, damaged online orders, restricted items, and final-sale items. A nearby store therefore cannot solve every online return. If the online process does not offer your item or its condition needs help, contact Customer Service before sending it through an unsuitable route.

Puerto Rico has its own boundary: online purchases cannot be returned at its stores, and store purchases made there must be returned within Puerto Rico. Special collections and designer collaborations may also have different conditions. Check the item’s terms before treating the standard route as available.

Check the order deadline rather than guessing its start

H&M’s current US help page states a 30-day return period. The current Returns and Refunds help tabs do not specify whether that general clock starts at purchase or delivery, or whether posting or warehouse arrival controls the final day for a mail return. The return instructions do say that an item may be unavailable to select because it is outside the period or is final sale.

Check your order’s return eligibility before paying to mail anything. If you are near the limit or cannot tell which deadline applies, ask H&M Customer Service with the order details. Do not assume that registering a return preserves eligibility beyond the applicable deadline.

Older search results contain a delivery-based postmark rule. They are not a substitute for the current order instructions when the current help layout no longer states that timing event. This guide therefore does not calculate an exact return-by date from an assumed start date.

Tags and the specific exclusion matter more than a sale label

Return items in resellable condition with tags attached. The current list of nonreturnable final-sale or restricted items includes bodysuits, hosiery, underwear other than bras, earrings, opened cosmetics, Pre-Loved purchases, and gift cards. Swimwear without its hygienic seal is excluded, with bikini tops excepted from that particular restriction.

Items specifically marked Final Sale cannot be returned, exchanged, or refunded. The page also includes red-sticker Sale items purchased in a store. That is more specific than saying every discounted item is final sale: inspect the item’s label and purchase terms rather than replacing the listed condition with a blanket sale exclusion.

The separate transportation restrictions page says H&M does not accept returns of items classified as hazmat. Examples of products that can contain flammable substances include nail polish, certain perfumes, nail-polish remover, and pressurized sprays. If such an item is wrong or defective, contact Customer Service. Do not mail it as an ordinary eligible cosmetics return. If reusing a box for a return with no hazmat contents, remove its LQ Hazmat label as H&M instructs.

Have the order number and email ready for the portal

Use the H&M US returns portal. Its public entry asks for the order number from the order-confirmation email and the email used to place the order. A bank-card statement is not one of those entry fields. If you cannot find the confirmation, locate the order details before assuming the portal can identify an item from the card alone.

The published instructions say to open the order details and choose Return item, select the items and reasons, then choose a return method and follow its packing instructions. A tracking email follows once the parcel is on its way.

Online exchanges are unavailable. For an item that does not fit, check the eligible return route before placing a separate replacement order. The stated $5.99 fee is not an automatic waiver for members; the current page does not list a general membership exemption.

Know which payment receives the money

The Refunds tab on the official returns page says most refunds are processed within 14 days of receiving the return. That is a processing period, not a guarantee counted from the day you post it. H&M emails once the refund has been processed.

Card payments normally go back to the card used for the purchase. Keep a bank- or financial-institution-issued gift card until you are finished returning items, since its refund goes back to that card too.

For an online purchase paid entirely with an H&M Gift Card or e-Gift Card, H&M issues a new e-Gift Card to the email linked to the order. For a split payment, it refunds the other payment method first, then sends the remainder to an H&M Merchandise Card. A store purchase paid with an H&M Gift Card, or returned with an H&M gift receipt, instead follows the store rule for an H&M Merchandise Card.

For example, suppose an order cost $100, paid with a $25 H&M Gift Card and $75 on a bank card, and the amount being refunded is $80. Under the stated split rule, $75 goes to the bank card and $5 to a Merchandise Card. This example starts with an $80 refund amount; it does not calculate any return-fee deduction.

The online return process also offers a Merchandise Card refund option that avoids waiting for bank processing and can be used online or in a store. That option is unavailable for Klarna purchases. Klarna refunds run through Klarna, which updates the payment plan after processing; check its app for status.

If a different retailer’s card-lookup rules prompted you to look for a receipt replacement, keep those separate. The Target receipt-lookup guide explains Target’s own process. H&M’s stated store requirements remain a valid receipt and the original payment method.
