IKEA return policy: 365 days unopened, 180 days opened

This guide follows IKEA’s US customer service pages as read on October 20, 2026. IKEA Canada and the UK have different rules, so check the country before trusting another page.

IKEA won’t refund or exchange items that are modified from how you bought them, dirty, stained, or damaged. Anything outside the policy is handled case by case after a store inspects the item. Discontinued items follow the normal windows.

Can you return assembled IKEA furniture?

Yes, if it’s still in new, unused condition and within the window. Bring every piece, including the hardware and the assembly instructions, to an IKEA store with your proof of purchase. If the furniture is used, damaged, scratched, stained, or altered, IKEA won’t refund it. For a truck pickup instead, the furniture has to be taken apart and packed before the driver arrives, or the pickup is rescheduled.

What do you need to return something to IKEA?

Your receipt (or online order confirmation) and a valid government-issued photo ID. IKEA keeps information from the ID in a company database used only to approve returns. For an exchange, also bring the card you paid with. If you used your IKEA Family number when you bought, IKEA can look the purchase up; its US pages don’t say what happens to a return with no proof of purchase at all.

You can return to any IKEA store, not only the one you bought from, through the Exchanges & Returns entrance. Returns aren’t accepted at IKEA Planning Studios or IKEA Pick Up Points.

How does IKEA return a big item or an online order?

IKEA says a FedEx return is refunded about two weeks after it reaches the store. For a pickup, where it’s offered, IKEA asks you to leave the item on a covered porch, in the garage, or at the doorstep.

How long does an IKEA refund take?

Refunds go back to the original payment method, typically within 5 to 7 business days. Only the net price on the receipt is refunded, and if a promotional item came with the purchase and you don’t return it, its value comes off the refund.

How does the IKEA mattress exchange work?

For a mattress you don’t like, IKEA US offers an exchange, not a cash refund. You can exchange a mattress once within 90 days if it isn’t dirty, marked, or damaged, by taking it back to a store with the receipt. The original price goes on an IKEA Refund Card: pay the difference for a pricier mattress, or keep the leftover credit for a cheaper one. If the mattress came by IKEA Home Delivery, IKEA collects it and delivers the replacement free. The exchange doesn’t cover bed bases, slats, or mattress toppers.

Does IKEA extend returns for the holidays?
