Bath & Body Works returns: refunds, credit, and exchanges
Check how used condition, receipts, purchase channel, and processing dates affect a Bath & Body Works return before you visit a store or pay for postage.

A used candle can qualify, but condition still matters
Bath & Body Works accepts eligible direct purchases that are new, gently used, or defective because of materials or craftsmanship, under its US store policy. Trying a scent does not automatically rule out a return. Significantly used products, excessive wear and tear, and intentionally defaced labels are excluded.
The company decides whether an item meets those conditions. The published policy does not give a percentage-burned test for candles, so do not rely on an invented half-full rule or an assurance that an empty jar will qualify. Returns must be made in the country of purchase, and the policy posted at the store handling the return governs where local terms differ.
Choose the outcome your receipt supports
The 90 days count from the original purchase date, not delivery. For qualifying returns, passing that point changes the refund to merchandise credit; the policy does not describe it as a blanket cutoff for every return.
| Proof or purchase type | Outcome in the direct-purchase policy |
|---|---|
| Original receipt, 90 days or less from purchase | Original-tender refund for listed payment types: cash for store cash purchases, credit/debit cards, and PayPal |
| Original receipt, more than 90 days from purchase | Merchandise credit |
| Gift receipt | Merchandise credit based on the purchase price on the gift receipt |
| No receipt | Merchandise credit based on the lowest selling price, with applicable promotions factored in; a qualifying exchange is another option |
Your shipping confirmation email can serve as a receipt. Bring it before assuming a missing paper slip means a no-receipt return. Refund amounts reflect the price paid and prorated promotions, discounts, coupons, and qualifying free items; shipping and handling are excluded.

At select US stores, non-receipted returns and exchanges are limited to $250 within a 90-day period. Defective merchandise is excluded from that limit. Select stores also require government-issued ID to track returns and exchanges. This aggregate limit is separate from the purchase-based original-tender period.
For an online purchase paid with a gift card, the refund FAQ says a new E-Gift Card is emailed. Returning the gift card itself is different: gift cards cannot be returned or exchanged, with cash redemption only where law requires it.
For a scent exchange, compare type and ticket price
An exchange under the additional terms requires a replacement of the same product type and the same ticket price. The policy gives the example of a three-wick candle exchanged for another three-wick candle with the same ticket price. Matching the candle type alone does not promise an upgrade to a higher ticket price, and the sale price you paid is a different figure.
For a product obtained with a loyalty reward, the receipt-based rule allows an exchange for another item meeting reward-redemption eligibility. Without a receipt, the additional exchange terms apply. If you choose merchandise credit for that reward item, with or without the receipt, the policy uses its lowest selling price with applicable promotions; it does not promise cash at the reward’s face value or automatic restoration of the reward.
The exchange FAQ says exchanges are unavailable online. Website purchases can be exchanged in stores; buying a replacement online and returning the unwanted item is a new purchase and a separate return.
Pick the route for the original purchase
Store and Buy Online Pick Up In Store purchases must return to a store. A purchase shipped from the website or app can generally be returned in a US store or by mail, but exchanges and gift returns from the website are handled in stores. For a website order that arrived damaged or with the wrong product, use Customer Care chat as the website policy directs.
For an ordinary website return:
- Open the Bath & Body Works returns portal. Have the order number and email ready; these are the fields on the entry form.
- Identify the item and choose Visit a Store or Ship it Back, as appropriate.
- For a store visit, bring the item and the portal’s return slip, shown on your phone or printed.

Starting in the portal does not complete the return or lock in an original-payment refund. For a website purchase brought to a store more than 90 days after purchase, the website policy calls for merchandise credit regardless of the portal-start date. For mail, it uses the date the facility processes the return. Allow time for that handling if your preferred refund depends on staying within the period.

Before paying to mail a website return
The mail instructions say to choose Ship it Back, pack securely, include the portal packing slip, and use the return address provided there. You pay return shipping; the company does not provide a prepaid label. Use an insured, trackable carrier service.
Keep each order in its own package with its own return label. Do not combine orders in one box, and do not put more than 24 items in one return package. The policy says packages over that limit are discarded without processing, replacement, or refund. Ineligible items, including significantly used products, can also be discarded without refund.
Tell the carrier if the contents include flammable liquids or aerosols so it can help you follow the applicable shipping requirements. Do not assume any ordinary parcel service accepts the contents as packed.
The mail process can take up to 14 business days to complete and issue the refund. Payment posting is a separate stage: the refund FAQ gives 3–5 business days for an eligible original-payment refund and says PayPal or ApplePay credits may take longer. It suggests allowing up to 30 days for the refund to show and contacting Customer Care if it has been longer. Do not treat either interval as a guaranteed total counted from the day you mail the box.
For another retailer’s missing-receipt process, use its own rules; the Target receipt and payment lookup guide explains that separate route. Bath & Body Works’ lowest-price credit is not a universal retail rule.
If you bought through Instacart or another seller
For an Instacart purchase with its receipt, the store policy offers merchandise credit at the price paid. Without the receipt, the no-receipt credit or additional exchange terms apply.
Social-shop purchases such as TikTok and authorized-seller purchases such as Amazon start with that seller’s return policy. They are not accepted through the ordinary Bath & Body Works store or online return process.
A separate authorized-seller policy provides a possible escalation for original US end-user buyers who first tried unsuccessfully to return a qualifying product to an authorized seller. It excludes unauthorized sellers and direct Bath & Body Works purchases, including social shops. Submit the Customer Care request within 90 days of purchase, with the seller’s name, receipt showing place, price and date, return reason, proof of the seller attempt, and a product photo. Provide any further information requested.
Wait for mailing instructions under that process; the customer pays postage and the product must be received, inspected, and processed before a refund. The policy lists approximately 21–28 business days thereafter for a check, or 7–10 for an e-gift card. This is a separate, conditional process, not permission to take an Amazon order straight to the store counter.
