Start with your proof of purchase

Your receipt, invoice, order history, or order email can establish proof of purchase. Losing the paper receipt does not necessarily leave you without proof.

AE’s US return policy specifies a different-size exchange when you have no proof at all. It does not promise a refund or merchandise credit in that situation.

Choose your next step by the proof you have

Can you show proof of purchase?

  • Receipt, invoice, order history, or order email Check the refund or credit window below.
  • No proof of purchase The published option is an exchange for a different size, subject to the return conditions.

If your missing receipt is for a Target purchase, use Target’s receipt lookup and no-proof return options.

Do you get a refund or merchandise credit?

Eligible returns with proof of purchase qualify for a full refund within 30 days of purchase, or merchandise credit within 60 days. Online purchases get an extra 7 days. AE starts the clock at purchase, rather than delivery.

Purchase Full-refund window Merchandise-credit window
In a store Within 30 days of purchase Within 60 days of purchase
Online Within 37 days of purchase Within 67 days of purchase

The online figures add AE’s published 7-day allowance to its 30- and 60-day windows. AE’s FAQ says no returns after 60 days, with that additional online allowance. It does not specify whether the extra allowance is a postmark or warehouse-arrival deadline.

American Eagle's policy lists a 30-day refund window, 60-day merchandise credit window, extra 7 online days, and item-condition requirements

Unlimited returns and tagless returns are not the current published rule. Items must be unworn, unwashed, and undamaged, with all labels and tags attached. Swimsuits and underwear need their hygienic liners in place. Final Sale items cannot be returned or exchanged.

Sale or clearance items remain eligible with proof, unless marked Final Sale. If an item arrived damaged, AE says you can return it and directs questions to Customer Service. Returns must be made in the country of purchase, and suspected fraud or abuse can lead to refusal.

Choose a store or a mailed return

Store returns are free. AE’s policy allows returns at AE, Aerie, Offline, or AE Factory stores, including online purchases. Use the official AE store finder to choose a location.

Items bought in a store must normally go back to a store. If you ordered home delivery in a store using cash or a debit card, AE’s FAQ gives a separate option: return online for merchandise credit, or to an AE or Aerie store for a refund.

For an online order, wait until the full order has shipped before starting a return. Mail returns cost $5, with these published exemptions:

  • Real Rewards Level 3 members and Credit Cardmembers.
  • Aerie bras, bralettes, swimsuits, and third-party footwear.

All Real Rewards members can choose Instant Credit as an emailed AEO e-gift card. That benefit does not give every member a return-fee waiver.

  1. Open AE’s Start a Return portal.
  2. Enter your order number and email address.
  3. Follow the return instructions and choose your refund option.
  4. Print the shipping label or use the digital label at USPS.

How do exchanges and refunds work?

Exchanges with proof are available at AE, Aerie, or Offline stores within 60 days, plus 7 extra days for online purchases. AE does not accept exchanges by mail. Its suggested alternative is a new order and a separate mailed return.

For mailed returns, allow 2–4 weeks for AE to receive the items and issue the refund. The original-payment refund should then appear within 5–7 business days, depending on your financial institution. Merchandise-credit e-gift cards are emailed after AE receives the items; Instant Credit is a separate option at return initiation.

If you paid with Afterpay and accept an e-gift-card refund, your biweekly Afterpay payments remain due. Check Afterpay’s email about the refund and payment plan.

Are upcoming holiday dates confirmed?

The current notice does not confirm an extension for the upcoming holiday season. The holiday notice visible on October 20, 2026 still ends on February 1, 2026. Check AE’s live policy for a new announcement before relying on extra holiday time.
