Is Costco Executive worth it? Count eligible spending first
Compare the Executive upgrade fee with eligible rewards, a midyear quote and benefits you will use, without counting gas or treating credits as cash.

Compare the extra fee with spending that earns the reward
If you would keep a standard US Costco membership anyway, the Executive decision starts with the additional $65 a year, plus applicable tax. The total Executive renewal price is $130. Comparing the reward with all $130 answers a different question: whether the reward alone covers the entire membership.
Costco’s Executive Rewards terms set the annual reward at approximately 2% of qualifying pre-tax purchases, less refunds. At that rate, $3,250 of eligible annual spending earns $65. That covers the full-year upgrade fee before tax, without assigning value to other benefits.

Your credit-card bill or total Costco budget can overstate the amount that earns 2%. The US exclusions include gasoline, food-court purchases, Shop Cards, membership fees, cellphones and their accessories or service plans. Taxes, shipping and miscellaneous fees also do not qualify. Alcohol and prescription eligibility varies by state; use Costco’s current exclusion list for those items.
Only purchases by the Primary and active Primary Household cardholder count. Qualifying Costco Travel purchases count once travel is completed, with further travel-charge exclusions. The reward is capped at $1,250 per 12-month period.

A $400 monthly budget can still fall short
Suppose you spend $400 a month but only $250 qualifies after removing gasoline, tax and other excluded spending. These are hypothetical household figures:
| Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|
| Eligible monthly purchases | $250 |
| Eligible purchases over 12 months | $3,000 |
| Approximate reward at 2% | $60 |
| Reward minus the $65 annual upgrade | −$5, before applicable tax |
You could still choose Executive for benefits you will use. The 2% reward alone would not cover the upgrade in this example. Buying extra things to close the gap increases your spending; it does not make the original shopping plan cheaper.
Use expected net purchases rather than a best-case cart. If a large electronics purchase is part of your plan, check Costco’s electronics return rules. A return reduces eligible spending and therefore the reward calculation.
A midyear upgrade needs a new calculation
Costco prorates the upgrade charge by the months remaining in your membership. Purchases made before the upgrade do not qualify retroactively. Ask for the actual charge, then compare it with purchases you expect to make after upgrading.
- Assumed upgrade quote, before tax
- $32.50
- Reward rate on eligible future purchases
- 2%
- Eligible spend to match that quote
- $32.50 ÷ 0.02 = $1,625
The $32.50 is an example, not a quote for your account. At the next renewal, the full Executive price applies. Evaluate that next full year separately.
The certificate’s timing also differs from a full year’s projected earnings. Costco issues the reward about three months before renewal, reflecting earnings through its issue date. Its terms require current, paid Executive status at the end of the membership year. Do not expect every purchase in your annual estimate to appear on the next certificate.
Count a monthly credit only when you would use it
Costco’s Executive benefits include a monthly $10 credit for an eligible order of $150 or more through Costco on Instacart or SameDay.Costco.com. The US partner terms require an active Executive membership linked to an eligible account.
It is one credit per membership each month across the eligible platforms, and unused credit expires at month-end. Alcohol, prescriptions and gift cards do not count toward the minimum or receive the credit. Taxes, fees and tips are excluded from the qualifying amount. Compare the delivered basket’s final total with how you would otherwise buy it; an order placed only to use a credit is extra spending.
Early shopping access may be useful too. Check your warehouse’s hours and count the convenience according to your needs, rather than adding an invented cash value to the reward calculation.
A downgrade does not let you keep both full amounts
Costco does not guarantee that the reward will match the upgrade fee. Its terms require canceling or downgrading to refund the current upgrade fee, and subtract issued or accrued 2% rewards from that refund. The terms also provide for forfeiture when rewards exceed the refund amount, and Executive-only benefits stop.

Take your eligible-spending estimate and actual upgrade quote to the warehouse membership counter. Choose Executive when the reward and benefits you would already use justify the extra charge, without needing additional purchases to make the calculation work.
